Studio
Complexity. Dialogue. Originality that endures
We use architecture to shape cities, elevate places, and improve the way people live.
We are Qarta Architektura, a leading architectural studio with nearly a thirty-year history, headquartered in Prague’s Karlín. Since 1996, we have conceived more than 920 projects for over 780 clients and have built 74 buildings. Our team consists of over 35 in-house architects and engineers. Thanks to that, we share rich experience and creative ideas every day; we approach each project with a comprehensive outlook and always in individual dialogue with the client.
Our broad portfolio spans urban masterplans, residential complexes, public buildings, sports facilities and churches, down to family houses and interiors. Each design is an original combination of the client’s individuality and thoughtfully refined details, all within the unique atmosphere of the site.
We have extensive experience with new constructions, but we welcome the challenges of reconstructions, which we regard as transformations. Our approach is to honor historical context and breathe new life into old structures. Conversely, we design new buildings to perform in the long term – not just through durable and eco-friendly materials, but through a holistic approach and responsible architecture that stands the test of time.
In Qarta, we realize inspiring, diverse, and welcoming cities and places where people enjoy spending time and where the vision of each client is brought to life – always with our distinctive Qarta signature.
QA Team
Jiří Řezák
Founder
Jiří Řezák founded Qarta in 1996 together with his wife Martina and two friends. Shortly after, he won a competition to become the local architect and began collaborating with the Spanish architect and urban planner Ricardo Bofill on the revitalization of Karlín in Prague, a project he remains involved with to this day.
“Karlín was a very unattractive place. Nobody wanted to go there. I am deeply pleased and proud that from an entirely industrial zone a fully-fledged urban quarter emerged, and that I could be part of it,” says Jiří, who is behind Corso 1, 2 and 3, the Karlín urban plan, the reconstruction of the Machine House building (HQ of Qarta for nearly 20 years), the Fragment house, the Sekyra Development administrative building on Rohanský ostrov, the residential buildings above Invalidovna metro station, and also the Prusa Research campus.
And a question: which trends in architecture does he consider most significant now? “Originality and long-term sustainability are, in my view, the most important driving forces of our work.”
Martina Řezáková
Co-founder, Chief Financial Officer
Martina is one of Qarta’s founders and remains one of its key figures today. Thanks to Martina, Qarta operates as it should. As CFO she oversees everything related to architecture from the financial side. Qarta is, for her, first and foremost a life’s work and joy.
And what is it like to collaborate for more than 25 years in the same firm with one’s spouse? “Jiří handles it well, so it works. But seriously now – one must speak of mutual respect, understanding, and humility. It’s important for me to maintain this philosophy across the whole office.”
Pavel Fanta
Partner
Pavel Fanta, one of QA’s core members for more than 17 years. He dislikes clichés that an architect must have foresight, personal empathy, or high creativity – these are for him self-evident and need not be spoken of. Instead, he emphasizes the necessity of strategic thinking, personal experience from travel, promoting innovations in the field, continuous learning, and educating young architects.
He would personally say: “Qarta? Don’t be trendy, be modern; seek, find, don’t settle, keep re-evaluating, define a vision. Surprise! Don’t wait!! Work hard!!! Stay forever young!”
Tomáš Němec
Partner
“In the past, the façade of every building told a story, was tied to art, adorned with sculptures and considered details. Residential projects of the last decade, however, often look alike. Their architecture is monotonous and uniform,” says Tomáš Němec, who has been part of our studio for 14 years.
As a Qarta partner, he has contributed to key projects such as Fragment, Villa Chittussi, Loox, Meta Modřany, and the Scuderia Showroom. He is currently working, for example, on the reconstruction of Českomoravská metro station or the residential project Nová Kunratická in Liberec. He studied architecture also in Spain and worked in architectural offices in Madrid. Not well known, he is passionate about sports and is even a member of the Czech national Australian rules football team.
Thanks to Tomáš, Qarta succeeded in building more beautiful, daring and diverse cities – from interiors to housing and office buildings to large-scale territorial studies.
Lukáš Němeček
Partner
Lukáš began working at Qarta as an intern during his university studies. Today, after nearly 15 years, he is a partner and a leading member of the studio.
Lukáš’s innate patience has allowed him to thrive in the complex and demanding profession that architecture is. Yet he admits that despite his long-run endurance he would like to significantly speed up the many-year construction processes.
“What is my greatest inspiration? I love traveling and absorbing the context and mood of places. Often I’m surprised by well-known buildings when I experience them on site. That is precisely my goal in our projects – I want us to surprise through our work and create inspiring architecture with exceptional atmosphere, details, and surroundings. At Qarta, together we seek the right paths that ensure this for each of our projects.”
