For us, sustainability is not only about using ecological materials, but about the overall approach: we design new buildings and places to serve for centuries, while giving old ones new meaning and functions.
Sustainability
We try to find sustainability in every step and in our overall architectural approach. For our studio, the structure of the building matters just as much — if not more — than simply substituting one material for another. We understand that true sustainability requires high-level engineering thinking, using the best materials and combinations for each specific purpose.
We do not pursue alternative construction systems that risk common physical problems like poor acoustics or condensation. Instead, we — as the first and only architecture firm in the Czech Republic — use the certified Cree system, which is primarily based on wood, even in residential development. By designing entire buildings with the Cree system from the earliest studies, we can reduce building emissions by around 40%, and in specific structural components such as façades or ceilings, emissions can be reduced by 70%–80%.
The benefits of the Cree technology don’t stop there: it is modular, enabling faster construction, flexible adaptation, and more efficient use of energy and resources. It also increases productivity, requiring less labor on site.
However, using ecological materials alone is not enough. We are convinced that sustainability also comes from extending the life of existing buildings and finding new purposes for them — not just building new ones. In this way, even buildings made of conventional materials can be sustainable when thoughtfully integrated into long-term use.
