An unusual reconstruction of a classical apartment building in Prague’s historic center took nine years to complete. The story of this remarkable building stretches back to the 14th century. Its continuation thus required an extremely sensitive approach, informed by a thorough study of its historical context.

The building’s long and layered history has over time been shaped by a variety of circumstances, each influencing its form and function. It embodies architectural styles from multiple periods, reflecting centuries of gradual adaptation and thoughtful transformation.
Revelation and Integration of Historical Layers
We embraced an approach focused on revealing and refining the building’s hidden historical layers, placing them in deliberate contrast with new architectural elements. The unifying element lies in the choice of materials – raw metal, glass, and concrete in their pure form subtly weave through the structure, guiding its inhabitants through the narrative of its past.
This principle is applied consistently across the entire reconstruction, from the new floors in the Romanesque cellars, through the exposed remnants of a Gothic pointed arch on the façade, to the classical roof truss. In the interiors, carefully scraped plaster surfaces reveal traces of previous paint layers, transforming historical remnants into contemporary aesthetic features.
Návrat do 40. let
Podařilo se nám také obnovit zastřešení hlavního dvora v jeho původní podobě. Nýtovaná konstrukce s prosklenou střechou byla z bezpečnostních důvodů sejmuta při bombardování Prahy v roce 1945. Dohledali jsme historickou dokumentaci a díky tomu jsme mohli zastřešení restaurovat a znovu použít.
Respektovali jsme, že i některé další prvky jako fasády, výplně otvorů nebo truhlářské a zámečnické výrobky, je nutné zachovat v jejich někdejší podobě. Původní jsou také omítky, keramické a dřevěné masivní podlahy, stropní trámy, konstrukce stropů a krovu a také kamenické části jako schodiště, ostění nebo dlažby.
Důležitost bydlení v centru Prahy
Obytná funkce je pro staré centrum Prahy velmi důležitá, protože jen díky ní tu mohou vznikat přirozené sociální vztahy. Jednotlivá podlaží budou tedy i po drobných úpravách znovu sloužit pro bydlení. Vzhledem ke standardům 21. století bylo třeba provést změny například v umístění toalet a koupelen. Podkrovní prostory byly navrženy jako obytné včetně nového přístupu. Další významnou, ne však agresivní stopou, jsou vestavěné výtahy. Technologie jsme však do stavby integrovali tak, aby nebyly příliš zřetelné. V přízemí domu se pak nachází prostory pro restauraci či hostinec. Zachovali jsme také původní průchozí funkci domu.
